Hello Hume’ns (The awesome people of the Hume area). Another edition of your weekly skim for positive news, weekend plans and community highlights that you think is important or that you actually care about.

It looks like we are all too cold and only the kids want to do stuff, considering it’s the end of school holidays. It is so tempting to hibernate like a bear, but grabbing something from a local business would be one of the best things you can do. This weekend is a bit light on for things to do locally but whatever you choose stay warm and dry!!

Rubbish Dumping has become a hot topic and a scourge of our beautiful municipality. A few occasions in Wildwood a property owner has been found to have been burning off illegal dumped rubbish. The Hume Council has now teamed up with the EPA in order to strengthen the penalties for illegal dumpers. The council not only have name and shame campaigns to stop dumpers, but now have the EPA to hand out larger fines and more powers for compliance, to compel dumpers to adhere to paying the fines when found to be in breach. When Hoons tear up the streets and put people at risk, our natural instinct is to do something about it. As the problem progresses that urge becomes stronger and ideas and suggestions start to flow. A trial has been proposed to implement acoustic cameras. In the last council meeting, Hume council have agreed to lobby the government for Hume to become the first adopter of the technology. During council’s 22nd June meeting, councillor Naim Kurt asked his colleagues to back his push for council to formalise a ‘Screech Busters blitz’, in Hume through a partnership with police and EPA. He said the blitz would help to “hunt down hoons” and improve safety on local streets.

So what is the problem with this you might ask? If the cameras are triggered by sound the cameras could turn this area into the first area to be a surveillance area. The issue that jumps out to me is, we will be the first area to have infrastructure that can be used against the citizens and limit freedom of movement for instance. It’s another problem we will all have do deal with if it is used in the wrong way. [ INFO ]

A new round of public consultation on the draft noise sharing plan for Melbourne Airport’s third runway will start next month. If you want to have your say the second round of consultations will be from Monday 10th August until Saturday 3rd October. [ INFO ]

Remember when pinball machines were everywhere? These days it’s hard to find them unless you look a little bit harder and I have done that for you this week. We found this place in Campbellfield on Barry Rd, just near the Hume Highway were you can relive your youth and teach the kids what real fun is. It is located inside Mancave Madness with the main attraction being the pinball machines. They have on offer a wide selection of classic & modern pinball machines. It is known for its nostalgic atmosphere, engaging gameplay, & friendly environment. Experience the pinball thrill. If you’re really into these games of nostalgia, then why not try your hand at joining in on a tournament held monthly. [ INFO ]

This Section is about informing everyone about how Data centres are causing a risk to our health and changing the area we all live in and love. I have been tracking what is going on for the whole area. Please let me know if you’d like me to write anything in particular.

The capitalists are coming!! Watch Kevin O’leary from Shark tank tell us how good Data centres are and that the government should only worry about policy. This is so they have a guideline to then basically water down the policy or not even adhere to it. It just goes to show how little these investors and companies care about us and will do what they want, all in the name of profits. [ INFO ] Watch this Sunday Night.

Council is hosting a range of activities, workshops and events across its libraries, youth spaces and Artrise, with a jam-packed schedule for youth over the winter break.
