Humes Local Heroes

Each week, it strikes me how generous this area is. I discovered that we all have a big heart and support those in need. Why I am blown away is, we have locals going above and beyond for others. The Hume area has a generous spirit, and nobody points that out. Thank you, Awesome Hume’ns.

Baking for Brain Cancer Part 2

The Mentor and the Mentee

Last week we wrote Part 1 about the Awesome Hume’n Rebecca Bremner, who is the owner of Ottimo Bakery in Sunbury. This week is Part 2, about Rebecca’s story and why Ottimo Bakery even exists and why Rebecca chose to raise money for this cause. Last week’s recap: from an early age Rebecca found cooking and Baking which lead her to meet a very important person in her life. Meet John Reid.

Ever had someone in your corner, someone who helped you become more through their belief and passion. They were clapping for your achievements and lifted you up with their knowledge, they helped you to be confident about pursuing your dreams. Well that was John, he was a teacher and a mentor who wanted nothing but success for you.

John Reid was an extraordinary person in many ways. He was a titan in sourdough baking circles and has been an influence on an industry. Johns knowledge saw him to become a mentor to many, and held workshops, and that’s how Rebecca honed her craft.

Rebecca recounts an emotional memory

I was just about to say the last time I saw him was two weeks after my son was born, my youngest, and he said to me again “you need to start this bakery” and “I said, I do but I've got my hands full at the moment and once he's a bit older, that's what I want to do”. He said "I'll be here ready when you are”. So my last memory of John was him playing with my two-week-old son's feet.

That was a week before Victoria went into their first lockdown. Twelve months after that, John got diagnosed with brain cancer and at the end of that year he passed away. So it was very, very sudden for his family.

Brain cancer is such a devastating diagnosis to have which is why Rebecca is participating in the fundraiser on 31st of May. The statistics for survival haven’t improved for over 40 years and any contribution helps improve this outcome by getting the scientists that one step closer.

Stay tuned for Part 3 in next week’s edition. Touched again and closer this time!
