Stronger together

support a great cause

Hello Hume’ns (The awesome people of the Hume area).

This week I want to dedicate this newsletter to Second Chance Animal Rescue, (SCAR). If I had to make a choice on which charities to give to, then I would choose two. The first is the Royal Melbourne children’s appeal and the other is SCAR. This is one of those organisations you didn’t know you needed until you need them, if your a pet owner or animal lover. Check out their tireless work and how they help the world be a better place. [ INFO ]

In this week’s Humepulse edition:

  • Stronger together appeal

  • A park to honour a Great Hume’n

  • Restaurant pick of the Week

Hume Council News & Events

Rates cap vs Services vs New buildings

The fair go rate cap system has put the area of Hume in a place that will see hard choices have to be made. The current system doesn’t reflect the new costs associated with building new infrastructure and delivering services. Sunbury have a pool that has been renovated recently with some paint and minor works as that’s all the council could afford. This pool really needs to be updated. The costs for delivering new projects have doubled, while the funding from the government have reduced by 60% - 70%. [ INFO ]

Urban development’s dark outcome

An avoidable tragedy that is being blamed on urbanisation. An increase in wildlife strikes now at the centre of a new campaign to change the law and have mandatory reporting be brought in. [ INFO ]

Calendar of Freebies

We thought we would add events that are free or cost very little to attend. Check out the Council Calendar for this week [ INFO ]

First of its kind for Hume

Ever wondered what happens when you drop off your used batteries at the supermarket in those bins, where they go to get recycled? Well, now I have the answer. Recently a new first of it’s kind facility had just opened up. As everything we buy these days has a battery, at least we know it will be recovered sustainably and close by. [ INFO ]

New approach to careers a winner

A group of students attended a new industry initiative to help them get educated and keep them engaged. It was an overwhelming success and all involved walked away better for having attended. Find out about Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs). [ INFO ]

Unanimous decision to rename a park

A Sunbury community member who tirelessly contributed to the area has been honoured by naming a park after her. This request was supported by the local community and Council. Why was she so revered as a Sunbury Great and why she will be commemorated. [ INFO ]

Restaurant pick of the Week

USTA

One of the great pleasures I have is discovering this great place we call Hume. It’s best qualities is it’s diverse culinary delights (not to mention the awesome people that live in it) . 😉😉

Why fly to Turkey when we have a slice of it right in our own backyard. Usta is a turkish restaurant based in Greenvale nestled between a service station and a fast food place. This unassuming restaurant is proof that location is not always the winning combination because the owners and chefs show what you can do with passion and great ingredients.

The word USTA means craftsman and that’s what you get on the plate. The meat is juicy and the dips are creamy and full of flavour. Honestly, this is modern turkish cuisine at it’s finest and did I say… It’s in our own backyard. This place definitely gets a tick of approval. [ INFO ]
