Each week, it strikes me how generous this area is. I discovered that we all have a big heart and support those in need. Why I am blown away is, we have locals going above and beyond for others. The Hume area has a generous spirit, and nobody points that out. Thank you, Awesome Hume’ns.

Baking for Brain Cancer Part 3
The Hardest News
The past few weeks I have shared a story about the Awesome Hume’n Rebecca Bremner, who is the owner of Ottimo Bakery in Sunbury. This week is Part 3, of Rebecca’s story, and why Ottimo Bakery is embarking on the Baking for Brain Cancer fundraiser. We met her Mentor and friend John Reid last week. This week, we discover her second reason for the fundraiser, meet Rebecca’s Cousin Bek.
Rebecca said to me “you know, it's one thing to see somebody that you've learnt so much from get this cancer and pass away. It's another thing to watch your family go through it “ That sentence is so raw, and better than anything I could write. The sentence conveys just how much love and the impact this has had on her.
Bek was diagnosed in 2023, and undergone many surgeries and a lot of treatment. Bek had been cancer-free for quite some time, but recently it has come back. Bek has just been given a terminal diagnosis and Bek has 2 sons.
Rebecca has grown up with her cousin Bek and is someone she loves dearly, as Rebecca explains to me, holding back tears and her voice reduced to a lower choked up tone.
When Rebecca recounted her story to me, I just had to help. Her story is one of tragedy, love and a determination to do whatever is needed to help a loved one. Although Rebecca can’t change the outcome for her cousin she can help others, through raising funds for treatment and a search for a cure.
The statistics for survival haven’t improved for over 40 years and any contribution helps improve this outcome, by getting the scientists that one step closer.
Brain cancer is such a devastating diagnosis to have for all involved, which is why Rebecca is participating in the fundraiser Baking for Brain Cancer on Saturday 31st of May.
On the day Rebecca will be offering guided tours of the bakery, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the baking process, including product tastings and demonstrations. The tours will be by donation, with all proceeds going directly to brain cancer research.
