Hello Hume’ns (The awesome people of the Hume area).

Hume Council News & Events
Scuttled Hotel proposal is back on
After the Council had voted against the proposal earlier in the year, that would have had a poor outcome for Broadmeadows and broadly the whole of Hume. In the recent meeting on the 8th of December the council have voted for a new proposal to be refined and the developer to go to market to test it. The proposal is for a hotel to be built next to the Council offices facing the aquatic centre. The vote allows the propsal to move forward and for a beneficial project to be submitted instead, to help better the area as well as job prospects for locals. Cr Misho is to be commended on his motion to vote against the project, because of his concerns that the council was at risk of having to pay if no one was staying there. The money would have come from council and would have affected all of us ratepayers. I hope this time all parties come together on this one. [ INFO ]
Differental rates proposal
Another proposal at this weeks council meeting was for differential rate payments. The proposal is to have various size companies pay a higher amount of rates. The council are looking at ways to make up for some of the rate arrears they are having to deal with. There is some caution on how this would work as the rate increase for businesses could end up hurting small businsess who employ a lot of locals. The council will undertake community consultations in 2026 before deciding whether to introduce differential rates in 2027-28. [ INFO ]

Syndicate buys a chunk of Craigieburn
With interested parties from abroad an Indian buyer finally clinched the deal. Some of the interest was from data centre groups. A developer syndicate has bought the 21ha former farm for $70 million. The original family who owned the property in 1994 bought it for $167,500, not a bad pay day if you can get it. The land will be used for commercial and residential use. [ INFO ]
