Hello Hume’ns (The awesome people of the Hume area). Another edition of your weekly skim for positive news, weekend plans and community highlights that you think is important or that you actually care about.

When the new Council was voted in over a year ago it was a unanimous group of like minded individuals all getting along. This weeks meeting is starting to show some cracks in the their relationship as some of the Council oppose to raise rates when the area is 50 million dollars in arrears of rate payments. At the 22nd of June council meeting the 2026-27 budget was adopted and Cr Overend, Cr Kurt and Cr Haddad couldn’t vote for a raise in rates due to their views on the community’s current situation. Another point that caught my eye this week was the Waste to Energy Facility Proposal. The Sustainablity Taskforce have asked the Council to oppose the proposal by HiQ Pty Ltd. This aligns with the Council and the community in it’s opposition to this project.

The Council is being taken to court by the ASU for allegedly docking workers pay who were covered by the protective action. The ASU are accusing the council as that was an unlawful action. [ INFO ]

As you may know the temporary fences have been put up around parts of the Bunnings / Harvey Norman carpark. I did some research and found out that we are getting another Gusman Y Gomez opposite the KFC, with another fast food place in that section. Opposite Harvey Norman there will be 3 new retail shops of varying sizes with one Multi National tenant already signed up. When I tried to gain more info everyone I spoke to was keeping a well guarded secret like it was an Apple store opening! (remember those?) [ INFO ]

When I saw the Red Rooster signs surrounding the Pascoe Vale Rd site, I thought didn’t they already sell one up the road in Roxburgh Park not long ago? After doing some snooping I found that the carpark will house an El jannah, Red Rooster, 2 other retail shops and another shop up the back. The retail outlets have not been leased out at this stage. This week we wanted to showcase this Gladstone Park institution as they’ve been having a bit of a hard time lately. The Biggest lollie shop in the world is being attacked by scammers. The scammers are copying their website and using the same contact info to look legit. The real website address is https://biggestlollieshopintheworld.com.au/ If you see the website address as something else do not buy from it and contact the business or go there in person and let them know of the scam site details. Another thing you can do is contact scamwatch and record the scam in their database. It’s hard enough for businesses to stay alive in these cost of living times. [ INFO ]

This Section is about informing everyone about how Datacentres are causing a risk to our health and changing the area we all live in and love. I have been tracking what is going on for the whole area. Please let me know if you’d like me to write about anything in particular.

The Broadmeadows Progress Association has written to Hume Mayor Carly Moore to request that the council host a forum. A group of Hume residents is calling for a community forum on data centres as a number of facilities in the municipality continues to rise. [ INFO ]

Council is hosting a range of activities, workshops and events across its libraries, youth spaces and Artrise, with a jam-packed schedule for youth over the winter break. The events will run throughout 29th June until 12 July, with bookings and small costs required for some activities. Check it out HERE
