Work Cover A Council Burden
This weeks council meeting had some interesting issues, brought up during the notices of motion section of the meeting. Cr Misho highlighted that Workcover premiums have doubled to $6.3 Million dollars and are eating into the council funds, and for no reason, as they have a good track record. This is an unfair burden, that then affects how services are delivered. [ INFO ] click on about 2 hrs 29 mins
Humes Local Heroes
Each week, it strikes me how generous this area is. I discovered that we all have a big heart and support those in need. Why I am blown away is, we have locals going above and beyond for others. The Hume area has a generous spirit, and nobody points that out. Thank you, Awesome Hume’ns.
Baking for Brain Cancer Part 1

Meet the Baker - Rebecca’s Early Years
Last week we introduced you to the Awesome Hume’n Rebecca Bremner, who is the owner of Ottimo Bakery in Sunbury. This week I caught up with Rebecca to find out about the great work she is doing, and why Rebecca chose to raise money for this cause. First of all, I want to to say I admire her bravery and courage, to tackle this horrible disease, but this is personal for her and I want to share with you all, her story.
Rebecca has been cooking since she was a kid, helping in the kitchen at an early age. Rebecca reminisces making scrambled eggs on toast. Rebecca and her mum did a bread making course when she was just 13 years of age. Her upbringing always involved bread, and she grew up with pizza ovens, you could say, bread and dough are in her blood.
This early exposure was the seed for her cooking passion, which has led to baking being her superpower. What she learnt was that making bread instead of buying it at Supermarkets, was that bread is nutritious, and it had been lost to mixed messages and convenience.
Upon moving to Sunbury her and her family quickly found that you couldn’t buy nutritious and healthy bread, so they would go to Yarraville and by a weeks worth of bread, but that quickly became unsustainable. This lead her to taking things into her own hands, and her future was changed forever when she met her mentor and teacher.
Stay tuned for Part 2 in next week’s edition. Lets spread the word!

Help Preserve the youth of tomorrow

Banksia Gardens is another awesome group of hume’ns helping the local community, and in particular, the young kids in the area. Banksia Gardens have been providing employment and training programs, through funding grants from the federal Government and philanthropy.
The outcome is they have set up some Cafes to provide work experience and other skills. Common Bean is the name of the cafe and the training participants have just released a range of Housemade pickles and preserves using all locally sourced ingredients.
The good start program has now been wrapped up and the way we can support the next group is by buying a Jar. The preserves and pickles are available from 3 locations. Common Bean Cafe Kangan TAFE, Building D at 59-69 Pearcedale Parade, Broadmeadows Common Bean Cafe DPV Health, 42/48 Coleraine Street, Broadmeadows VIC 3064, as well as at Banksia Gardens 71-81 Pearcedale Parade, Broadmeadows.
