Hume Council News & Events

Council Dilemma

It seems the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. I’m talking about the council having to rush a project based on an election commiment. The election commitment was for upgrades to the Eric Boardman Stadium in Sunbury made by the Federal Government if Labour was re-elected. The Council had not included it in their current full schedule of works. It means that now, there might be some delays on other projects to get all the works done in the next year. [ INFO ]

Council to minimise Gambling Harm

Hume council will commit to a stronger stance against gambling in its draft Gambling Harm Policy. According to the state government, Hume is ranked third highest in Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM) expenditure in Victoria. Council said in 2024/25, Hume residents lost $147.9 million to EGMs, marking the highest annual loss on record.

Cr Kurt voted against endorsing the policy in it’s current form. Cr Kurt went on to say “One of the things I was quite insistent upon which hasn’t made it into the draft report at this point, was that I believe if you operate on council land and you’ve got adjoining sports clubs operating in that precinct, some of that money should be returned to infrastructure investment in those clubs.”

I think he is onto something here but I would propose that the policy makes the operators pay a royalty based on the losses, so let’s say 10% and it goes into a fund that gets redistributed to the community in some way, like reduced rates or something like that?
